DISCO INFERNO

“People will do anything, no matter how absurd, in order to avoid facing their own souls. One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.” – Carl Jung

Disco Inferno is a series of digital artworks made for the major arcana in a tarot deck. Loosely inspired by the game Disco Elysium by ZA/UM, this series draws inspiration from the works of artist Jenny Saville and borrows the structure of chaos from Wassily Kadinsky. All the works in this series were made digitally, but confined to being composed from only two brushes and two shades of red as an exercise of artistic constraint in the digital medium where choices of brushes and colours are usually endless. Constraining the digital tools that were used to make this series encapsulates a sense of suppression of the inner psyche. The loose flow of brushstrokes used contrasts this refusal to confront the “shadow self” (Jung) as its darkness and light is released into a chaotic mess. As tarot card decks are used as tools of predictions of fate and personality, this art style underscores the push and pull of holding on to order and understanding of the psyche and amidst a conversely chaotic and seemingly unredeemable world.

Artist’s note:  Some cards are numbered wrongly above. Below is the updated and amended digital artwork, because evidently my dyscalculia extends into being unable to accurately perceive Roman numerals, which equals pretty small-brain energy.
